Random encounter generator
This random encounter generator draws from short original tables — encounter or loot — then lets you reset the decks. It sits next to the dice roller and initiative tracker; it does not paste SRD walls of monster stat blocks. Press draw encounter or draw loot for one row. No-repeat until that table reshuffles. Draws use crypto.getRandomValues. There is no account. Use dice when you only need a d20, and initiative when you need combat order.
Why a random encounter generator is not the SRD
A dungeon pause wants a spark: a traveller, a noise, a pocket of coins — not a pasted copyright wall. This random encounter generator exists as original short rows TheOwlBay wrote, next to dice and initiative, without copying Systems Reference Document monster text. If you need a d20 only, roll dice. If you need combat order, use the initiative tracker. We do not claim compatibility with a specific edition’s treasure tables and we do not host a virtual tabletop. Writing prompts are for fiction class; this page is table-shaped bursts for play. Charades is acting, not wandering monsters. Team names name the party; this page complicates their afternoon. TheOwlBay will not run your VTT.
How to draw a row
Press draw encounter or draw loot. Read the row aloud or keep it behind the screen. Press again for the next unused row in that table. Press reset tables to shuffle both decks back. If a table failed to load you will see that there are no rows. Share a result URL if the spark is worth keeping. There is no paste box in v1; the original tables ship with the page. Use the dice roller in another tab if the row asks for a roll you want to show the table. Nothing is uploaded and no TheOwlBay account is required. Initiative tracker remains the tool for turn order after the encounter starts. Writing prompts is the wrong button if you wanted a classroom essay hook.
How encounter and loot tables draw
Each table is shuffled independently with crypto.getRandomValues. A draw pops one row; repeats wait until that table is empty or you press reset tables. Encounter and loot do not share a pointer, so a loot click does not skip an encounter row. Rows are original prose, not scraped wiki text. We do not call this a legal SRD replacement or an official treasure appendix. There is no localStorage paste; reset only restocks. We do not simulate wandering-monster chance by hour of game time. Empty-table messages mean the data failed to inject or the deck is spent until reset. We do not claim genuine randomness; the integers come from the browser. Clearing the result is reset tables or another draw.
Who these tables are for
Game masters who want a fast spark at the table, new referees stuck in a hallway, and one-shots that need a twist without opening a legal PDF. It is not a replacement for your rulebooks and not a monster manual. Players can glance at loot as a joke reward; the GM still decides if it exists. Classroom RPGs should stick to the original G-rated rows. If you needed a team name for the party, use the team name generator. If you needed writing class prompts, use the writing prompt generator instead. Dice and initiative stay one click away for the math of a fight. TheOwlBay will not host your campaign files or map scans.
FAQ
Is this copied from the SRD?
No. Tables are original short rows. This random encounter generator is not a Systems Reference Document paste.
When should I just roll dice?
If you only need a d20 or 4d6 drop lowest, use the dice roller. Use this page for a spark of situation or loot.
Do rows repeat?
Not until that table is empty or you press reset tables. Draws use crypto.getRandomValues.
Can I paste my own table?
Not in this panel. Encounter and loot are the shipped original decks.
Is there an account?
No. Results run in the browser. Reset tables restocks both decks.
